If this were a poll, I would vote no.

Low self-esteem may be one major cause for the approach anxiety, but there are some other factors that have impact on it.
I'm no expert at this, but you can use the approach anxiety as a drive to raise your self-esteem.
When approaching a woman, I do get nervous, but I set my inner game so that the anxiety is an enemy wich I have to defeat. It becomes a challenge rather than a hindrance. If you overcome it, then you'll feel that you're the man. If you fail, you know you have room to improvement.

I don't know if you could call it high self-esteem, but I believe it is something that a person with low self-esteem find hard to do.

Well, what I can say for sure is that no one can control the way you feel, except you.

My vote would be yes it does help with approach. IME you're less bothered by rejection if you have strong self esteem because you know that you're worth it no matter what, so approach has less fear whether you get a win or a lose because you know you've still got high value regardless.

I actually read somewhere that a lot (most?) people have some sort of anxiousness in approaching and that it's natural.

For me it used to be about knowing what to say/having a smooth un-awkward conversation, rather than self-esteem issues.

in my opinion, there's a quick way to short circuit it calvie, before the esteem issue even sets in. Follow the 3 second rule even prior to launching a lengthy inner talk about "worthiness"
